The Order of the Garter was created by Edward III in 1348. Its origin is to be found in the following historical story : a blue garter fell from the left leg of Countess of Salisbury, the King quickly grabbed it up and gave it back to her. Courtiers who saw that scene began to smile ambiguously and unappropriate ideas were filling their mind. That's the reason why the King said "Honi soit qui mal y pense !"* and added that the mockers would be glad to get such a ribbon : shortly after he founded the noble Order of the Garter which was set under the aegis of Saint Georges.

* In that time, the English King as well as his courtiers were French speakers since they were from Normandy.
